East Side Family, Inc. Mission
A legacy of a continuous effort to maintain, build, and foster relationships within the community. In April 2016, The East Side Family became a non-profit organization with a mission to help someone in need. We believe that hunger is a root of many problems and if we can feed, educate, and uplift people to help change lives we are willing to do that
What We Do
Every year in June ESF holds an annual cookout that is open to anyone who comes to Martin Luther King Jr Park located at 1650 Garfield Ave, Des Moines, IA. This event is free of charge. We have a DJ, words of wisdom to the youth, honor a person who has impacted the lives of the ESF and provide everyone with a delicious meal prepared by the East Side Family.
- ESF has participated in the following activities over the past few years and look forward to doing many more:
- Buying new coats for elementary students.
- Purchase school supplies for Back-to-School Event
- Annual Community Cookout
- Give out turkeys & Thanksgiving baskets to families.
- Have a Christmas party for the community.
From 1990-2009 a few of the older men would invite all the younger men over to Virgil’s house on Sampson St on Father’s Day to just celebrate being a father and enjoying having a men’s day. Thank you, Virgil Benson, Ronald “Leech” Caldwell, Frank Renfro, Sr., and Robin Harris for starting this journey.
